About Accepting Institutions (Affiliated Organizations)

Institutions that can accept foreign nationals under the Researcher status of residence are limited to certain organizations as defined by law. Main examples include:

  • Companies that meet certain conditions (certified companies)
  • Innovation-creating companies (subject to special bonus points under the Highly Skilled Professional Ordinance)
  • Public corporations listed in Appended Table 1 of the Corporation Tax Act; public interest corporations authorized by the national or local government
  • Special legal entities, authorized legal entities, and independent administrative agencies
  • National or local governments of Japan or foreign countries
  • Mutual companies engaged in the insurance business; companies listed on Japanese stock exchanges, etc.

The required documents differ depending on which "Category 1 to 4" the accepting institution falls under. Higher categories require fewer attached documents. For details, please refer to the Immigration Services Agency's page on Status of Residence "Researcher".

List of Required Documents (Overview)

The required documents vary depending on the type of application (new entry, change of status, extension of period of stay, or acquisition of status of residence) and the category of the accepting institution.
