Visas for Studying in Japan

There are three main types of status of residence (visa) for those who wish to "study" in Japan. Each differs in purpose, eligible applicants, and whether employment is permitted. Please select the one that best matches your situation.

A status of residence for receiving formal education at a university, graduate school, vocational school, or Japanese language school. In principle, employment is not permitted, but with permission to engage in activities outside the status of residence, part-time work of up to 28 hours per week (up to 8 hours per day during long school vacations) is allowed. The period of stay is granted based on the school and course, up to a maximum of 4 years and 3 months.

A status of residence for academic or artistic activities that do not generate income, or for studying or learning cultural arts and traditions unique to Japan. This includes the study and practice of the tea ceremony, flower arranging, Japanese cuisine, Japanese dance, and traditional Japanese music. Remunerated activities are not permitted. The period of stay is 3 years, 1 year, 6 months, or 3 months.

A status of residence for acquiring skills, techniques, and knowledge by being accepted by a Japanese company or organization. This is a separate system from academic study (language/academic) or the Technical Intern Training program, and it is premised on applying the acquired skills after returning home. The period of stay is generally 1 year, 6 months, or 3 months.
