Foreigners residing in Japan who wish to switch to a different status of residence — for example, changing to a "Spouse of Japanese National" visa after marrying a Japanese national, transitioning from a Student Visa to an "Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services" visa upon finding employment, or changing the status of residence due to a job change or shift in duties — must submit a Status of Residence Change Permit Application. Remaining in Japan beyond the expiration of the current status without completing this change will constitute overstaying (illegal stay). For an overview of the procedure, please refer to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan's page on "Status of Residence Change Permit Application". Online applications are also available for various procedures.
When to Apply for a Change of Status of Residence
You may apply as soon as a change of status of residence becomes necessary. Whether the reason is a job change, a shift in work duties, a marriage requiring a spousal visa, or a transition from a student visa to a work visa, please gather the required documents appropriate to your circumstances and submit the Status of Residence Change Permit Application. The application must be submitted before your current period of stay expires.
