All statuses of residence, except for permanent residency, have a designated period of stay. If you wish to continue staying in Japan under the same status of residence, you must submit an Extension of Period of Stay Permit Application. For an overview of the procedure, please refer to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan's page on Extension of Period of Stay Permit Application.

When to Apply for Renewal of Your Period of Stay

Applications can be submitted from three months before your period of stay expires. You must apply by the expiry date itself (or the next business day if the office is closed on that date). Staying beyond the expiry date without renewing constitutes overstaying (illegal residency). We strongly recommend applying early with plenty of time to spare.

Online applications are also available for various procedures. Please note that fees vary depending on the date of acceptance. Be sure to also check the fee revisions effective from April 1, 2025 (Immigration Services Agency of Japan).
