According to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, the status of residence "Artist" is defined as follows:

Activities in the field of music, fine arts, literature, or other arts which involve remuneration (excluding those pertaining to the status of residence "Entertainer").

In other words, this covers income-generating artistic activities other than entertainment or sports performances that fall under the Entertainer Visa. Examples of eligible individuals include composers, painters, and writers.
