What Designated Activity No. 40 Gives You

Standard visa-waiver entries into Japan are typically capped at 90 days per visit and around 180 days per year in practice. Designated Activity No. 40 is fundamentally different: you receive an initial 6-month stay, extendable to a maximum of 12 months in a single stay. And because Japan can be re-entered after a departure, it can serve as a recurring annual base for those who wish to live part of the year here.

Feature Standard Tourist Entry Designated Activity No. 40
Maximum continuous stay 90 days Up to 12 months
Income / employment proof required N/A (none needed but limited) No (asset-based)
Spouse can accompany Separate entries Yes (No. 41, joint assets)
Residence card issued No Yes (on arrival)
Can engage in cultural activities Yes Yes

Employment in Japan is not permitted under this status. However, remote work for your overseas employer or business is a separate matter. Please inquire for guidance specific to your situation.

The Two Core Requirements—and Why They’re Harder Than They Look

① ¥30 Million in Verified Liquid Assets

At the time of application, you must demonstrate liquid savings of at least ¥30 million (approximately USD 200,000 or EUR 185,000 at current exchange rates). If your spouse is applying jointly under No. 41, both spouses’ assets may be combined to meet this threshold.

② Medical Insurance for the Duration of Your Stay

Japan requires proof of private medical insurance that covers death, injury, and illness for the entire stay. This is non-negotiable: Japan will not accept an uninsured long-term resident.

We strongly recommend arranging insurance before arriving in Japan, as some products cannot be purchased after departure from your home country. For those already in Japan, internationally available plans such as SafetyWing Nomad Insurance offer a cost-effective solution—though waiting periods, pre-existing condition clauses, and coverage caps vary and must be verified against the policy wording before submission.

We can advise on insurance options as part of your consultation.

From First Contact to Your Residence Card

A clear four-step process with Miyazaki guiding every stage.

STEP1

Document Review & Assessment

Send us your bank statements, balance certificates, medical insurance documents, and passport copy by email. We assess whether your asset profile and insurance coverage meet the requirements and advise on any gaps before proceeding.

STEP2

Application Package Preparation

Miyazaki prepares the application forms, statement of reasons, and itinerary on your behalf. You review the draft as a PDF, request revisions, and confirm. Spouse applications under No. 41 are handled concurrently.

STEP3

In-Person Filing (Same-Day Passport Return)

You must be physically present in Japan on the day of filing. We meet at Osaka Immigration Bureau or Kyoto Branch, you sign the documents on-site, Miyazaki accompanies you through the submission, and your passport is returned the same day.

STEP4

Electronic COE → Visa Issuance → Residence Card

Once approved, we forward your Electronic Certificate of Eligibility (e-COE) by email. Present it at your nearest Japanese embassy or consulate for visa issuance, then collect your Residence Card at the airport upon arrival in Japan.

Transparent, Fixed-Fee Pricing

No hourly billing. No hidden costs. One number covers everything.

COE Filing — Osaka / Kyoto Immigration (Primary Applicant)

¥260,000 (tax & disbursements incl.)

Covers: full document preparation, accompaniment to immigration, all fees, disbursements, and e-COE forwarding.
If your spouse wishes to accompany you, an additional fee of ¥80,000 (tax and actual expenses included) is required for the ‘Designated Activities No. 41’ application. Please note that dependent children are not eligible to accompany under this specific visa category.
Note: Applications outside the Osaka/Kyoto area are possible and quoted separately (travel expenses apply).

Who This Is For

“I’ve been coming to Japan for years on 90-day tourist entries. I finally want to stay for a full year in Kyoto. My assets are spread across accounts in Singapore and Switzerland.”

— Profile: Retired executive, Europe

“My spouse and I sold our business last year. We want to spend a year in Japan before deciding on our next move. Can we combine our assets for the ¥30M requirement?”

— Profile: Entrepreneur couple, Southeast Asia

“I work remotely for my overseas company. I want a legitimate long-stay status rather than endlessly renewing my tourist entry.”

— Profile: Remote professional, North America

If any of these resonate, get in touch. We will give you an honest assessment of your situation—no commitment required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ¥30M need to have been in my account for six months?
Not necessarily. While six months of stable balance is ideal, immigration authorities are more concerned with verifying that the funds are genuinely yours. If a large deposit occurred recently—from a property sale, investment exit, inheritance, or severance—we can document the source and present it persuasively. Please consult us early so we can advise before you prepare your bank materials.
Can my spouse apply jointly?
Yes. Your spouse may apply concurrently under Designated Activity No. 41, and both spouses’ assets may be combined to meet the ¥30M threshold. If your spouse wishes to accompany you, an additional fee of ¥80,000 (tax and actual expenses included) is required for the No. 41 application—this is separate from the primary applicant’s fee of ¥260,000. The No. 41 spouse must travel together with the No. 40 primary applicant at all times. Please note that dependent children are not eligible to accompany under this visa category.
Can I work remotely for my overseas company while on this visa?
Designated Activity No. 40 prohibits earning income through activities conducted in Japan. However, the treatment of remote work for a foreign employer is a nuanced area. We recommend consulting us on your specific employment situation before applying.
What if I am already in Japan when I apply?
That is the standard scenario. You must be in Japan on the day of filing—we meet at the immigration office, and the application is submitted in person. Your passport is returned the same day. If you are not yet in Japan, please contact us to plan the timing of your arrival.
My assets are in multiple currencies across several countries. Is that a problem?
Not at all—it is common among our clients. We consolidate multi-currency, multi-institution asset documentation into a clear presentation for immigration. We handle the yen conversion methodology and formatting so the reviewing officer can verify the total at a glance.
Can I extend beyond one year or stay long-term in Japan?
The maximum stay under a single grant of Designated Activity No. 40 is one year (initial 6 months, extendable once). After that, you must depart Japan. You may then re-apply from abroad and, if approved, return for another year. There is no upper limit on how many cycles you complete, provided you continue to meet the requirements.
Do stocks, real estate, or foreign-currency holdings count toward the ¥30M requirement? Are online banking screenshots acceptable?
No. Assets whose value fluctuates on a daily basis—such as stocks, securities, movable property, or real estate—are not accepted, nor are assets that cannot be immediately liquidated. The funds must be held as cash deposits in a bank account.

That said, the currency itself is not restricted. Deposits in any foreign currency are acceptable, provided the total is equivalent to ¥30 million or more when converted to yen. Additionally, online banking balance screens or transaction histories displayed in English, Traditional Chinese, or any other language are accepted as valid supporting documents.
Can I apply for the visa directly at the Japanese embassy in my home country?
Yes, in principle you may apply directly at the Japanese embassy (or consulate general) in your country of residence.

However, depending on individual circumstances and the course of the review, some applicants are asked to first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from Japan's Immigration Services Agency before the local window will accept the application. Our office provides support for the portion of the process involving obtaining the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) within Japan.
